In the local Mapuche language, Calcu means “magician.”
And indeed, winemakers Alejandro Jofre and Ricardo Rivadeniera
have created a magical “Super Chilean” blend from
the distinctive flavors of Chile’s Colchagua Valley.
Like the bull on the label and the talented young artist who
painted him, Calcu is an exuberant wine with unrestrained possibility.
Rather than being tied to a particular terroir, each vintage
of Calcu is free to reveal a different aspect of the Colchagua
Valley’s dynamic character.

2006 Calcu
In this “Super Chilean” blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon,
25% Carmenère, and 15% Cabernet Franc, winemakers Ricardo
Rivadeneira and Alejandro Jofre capture the diversity of the
Colchagua Valley by combining a range of flavors into a single
wine. Alejandro and Ricardo artfully blend the mineral notes
and fresh acidity of grapes from the Andes foothills with the
ripe tannins and red fruit from the center of the valley, and,
finally, add richness and body from grapes grown closer to the
Pacific Ocean. The resulting wine is lightly oaked, allowing
the grapes’ natural, fresh fruit character to shine through.

2009
Calcu Rosé
The Rivadeniera family always enjoyed drinking quality rosés
at home. Now, winemakers Alejandro Jofre and Ricardo Rivadeniera
have created their own magical rosé made from 50% Malbec, 40%
Syrah, and 10% Carmenère.
This vintage’s bouquet is floral with subtle notes of grapefruit
and spice. The palate is clean, crisp and well balanced with
hints of cherry and wild strawberry. It is a versatile wine
that pairs equally well with goat cheese, seafood, grilled chicken
and delicately seasoned Asian dishes.
While most other rosés on the market right now are from 2008,
Calcu’s 2009 vintage is the newest and freshest available. Rosés
are generally best drunk young.
